"The Morris Worm (1988)"

In 1988, a program was written by a student called Robert Tappan Morris.

The program was being sent to many computers on the internet when problems started. At first, the worm was not believed to be dangerous.

The worm was designed to copy itself and was moving to other machines. While the worm was spreading, many computers were slowed down.

Some systems were crashed and they were made unusable.

A lot of network traffic was created and the administrators were surprised.

The worm was found on university and company servers.

Today, the Morris Worm is remembered and is taught in computer security lessons. People were worried and computers were disconnected from the network.

An investigation was started and the cause was traced to Morris’s program.

The program was stopped from running by removing it from systems and by applying fixes.

After the event, new laws and rules were made for computer security.

Today, the Morris Worm is remembered as one of the first big internet problems.

Buzzwords & Beyond!

"The Honey Scam"

Honey was a very popular browser extension. Many YouTubers told their viewers, “Install Honey, and you will save money.” People liked it because it found coupon codes automatically when they wanted to buy something online. But later, some creators discovered a problem. Honey was changing their code links to its own and earning the money instead. It also used its database to show only small discounts, even if bigger ones were available. For many users, this was a big bug in the system, but it was actually part of Honey’s plan. Soon, videos appeared warning people about the truth. This is a real example of the saying “Garbage in, garbage out” — if a company gives you wrong information, you will get the wrong result in the end.
